soooo firstly one has to know the market that its making its product for this is normally done by both primary and secondary research.
primary research is research is research that is non-exist ant already and has to be obtained by going out into the public and collecting it through means such as questionnaires , field work and controlled experiments this is known as quantitative data other means are focus groups and observing people within the public this type of research is qualitative data

this allows you to have a more focused research onto what your looking for by controlling the questioning your giving to get the desired data you require however the disadvantage of this is that it is time consuming and can be quite expensive.

secondary research means looking through books , websites and various articles that can help you to know your market and help your business this is normally one of the main streams of research that is done to find various things such as whether a product was a fad or a trend and allows you to understand what products might be a continuous success within the market
